Perfect Hostel Packing List for Fresher’s

You are a fresher, starting out on your college life. You will finally have time to explore the campus, go out with friends, explore the city and much more. All of us at Texas Movers Group know how fun and exciting moving can be as long as everything makes it there in one piece.

But, what should you pack for going to a hostel? Being in a hostel is much different from being in a hotel or a lodge.

You’ll be sharing your room with many other people, and you will have shared access to certain areas. How do you pack for a hostel?

We thought we’d cut through the confusion and share our perfect hostel packing list for freshers, a list of essentials that will help you stay organized and comfortable.

A Basic Packing List

At a minimum, you will need a towel, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste, etc), and a clean set of clothes to stay in the hostel.

Blankets

One of the most important things you need for a hostel is a blanket. You will most probably be using the hostel common room to stay warm, so it is quite important that you have one.

Laundry Essentials

You’ll have to do a lot of laundry when you’re in a hostel. Your laundry bag will get wet if you don’t take appropriate precautions.

Just make sure that you pack some of the essentials such as; a cloth or towel to dry your clothes and socks to keep your feet dry, and you are all set.

Gloves

Gloves are one of man’s best creations. Not only do they keep your hands warm but they protect as well. Make sure that you have a pair of thick gloves that you can keep your hands warm.

Long-Sleeved Shirt

A long-sleeved shirt is a must-have for when the weather starts getting chilly. They can also protect your arms from getting sunburned.

Detergent and Fabric Softener

Buy plenty of detergent and fabric softener. You will be going through many different outfits and will sweat a lot while commuting between college and the hostel.

You might also have a few guests in the room at one point. Thus, you will definitely need a separate pack of fabric softener and detergent, which is not too expensive.

Laundry Bag or Basket

Your hostel room will usually be a combination of communal areas and private bedrooms, so you should always make sure you have a separate laundry bag and basket for your needs. Make sure you get a good basket that can hold all of your clothes, as there’s a risk of damage when the basket gets filled to the brim.

Plastic Tray

With hostel mess, dishes and other supplies like plates, cups and cutlery, you need a plastic tray to help you keep everything in order. This will make sure you have an organized and hassle-free life.

Lighting Unit

Most of the bedrooms in a hostel will be in low-light conditions, so you need to use a good lamp. It doesn’t have to be one of those one million candela ones, but it needs to be bright enough to read by at the very least.

Clothing Hangers

These days, most hostels have provided their own dorms and most students opt for this. Hangers will help you to avoid any unnecessary clutter while packing for your hostel stay.

Pillows and pillow cases

A pillow and pillowcase will provide ultimate comfort for your hostel accommodation. Plus, pillowcases can double as a way to pack a set of clean and dirty clothes so that you can wash the dirty clothes after each use. You may need to add a small mattress cover, depending on the kind of mattress you’re going to be sleeping on

Personal Hygiene Items

Just like the personal care items, you’ll need some of this in the hostel too. You’ll need to take soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, perfume and so on.

If you want to save a bit of money, make sure you pack everything in a small bottle so that you don’t run out of it in a hurry.

Communication and Charging Devices

In a hostel, communication is crucial. You’ll need to have a local sim card with you for calling people from your college, asking for directions and more.

However, you will also want to have a decent pair of headphones or speakers. If you’re on a call and you are told that they are ready to start dinner, you don’t want to have to stop the conversation.

If your friend has to get up to take a call, it will be distracting and a bit rude. You’ll also want to keep your charging devices with you.

Make sure you have your portable power bank and power cord so that you can charge your phone in your room. Of course, you will want to use your charger for your laptop as well. In case you are near a  socket, you can charge it on the go.

Toiletries and Other Essentials

When it comes to carrying toiletries and other essentials, you need a sturdy backpack that can carry your toiletries along. Remember to take your toothbrush, soap, toothpaste, shower gel, and all the things that are deemed as part of your standard bathroom kit.

Bathrobe, Jumper or Pajamas?

Coming back from a night out in the city, you will be very tired and might not even have the energy to get changed. A bathrobe will be a necessity in your room.

If you don’t have one, a simple jumpsuit will keep you warm, especially in winter. The bottoms and sleeves will be able to keep you comfortable.

But, you should also bring clothes that will let you express your individuality, so make sure you pack things that are either bright, bold, or with a twist!

Guide on How to Pack Your Dishes and Glassware When Moving

Whether you are moving across town or across the country, the process of packing dishes and glassware can be daunting. Many people just want to get it over with and pack everything up without worrying about what’s in their cupboards and drawers.

Sometimes, they forget to even check if they have all the pieces for their dishes or glasses before heading out to purchase them at a second location. Here at Texas Movers Group we’ve seen it all.

This guide will help you pack your dishes and glassware when moving so that you don’t have to spend hours stressing about it. Let’s get started!

A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Pack Your Dishes and Glassware When Moving

Start by Sorting Your Dishes and Glassware

When you begin packing dishes and glassware, the first step is to sort them. This way, you can be sure you have everything for the next move. If you own china sets and antique glassware, you’ll need to separate them first.

If you have flatware in addition to dinner plates, place the flatware in the upper section of your cupboards. You may want to put glassware in the lower sections, as these items tend to chip if they are exposed to heat and light.

If you have dinner plates and bowls in a dish towel rack, separate them before you pack them. You can label the dishes using stamps or tape to avoid any mix-ups.

If you have a larger set of dishes and glasses, you may want to remove one layer of dishes and put them into storage boxes.

Pack Fragile Items Carefully

Before you pack delicate items like flatware and platters, it’s a good idea to purchase packing boxes and tape them down securely. These boxes will help contain the delicate items and keep them in one place.

Bring Along Your Extra Dishware and Glasses

When you’re only living in one place, you don’t need to take your entire set of dishes with you. Instead, bring along some of your dishes, glasses, and flatware when moving to your new place.

It will help ease the transition. Pack perishable items like food When packing your fragile food items, make sure they are either in their original containers, sealed in a ziplock bag, or in a sealable container.

You’ll need more space to store your perishable items and won’t have time to finish cooking your meal.

Begin Packing Dishes and Glassware

This can be daunting because you have to go through each item and make sure it has been cleaned properly, but with a little time and care, everything will be ready to go when your new place is ready to greet you.

The first thing you have to do is make a list of everything that you own, or plan to own in your new place. Now, we know that this might sound like a lot to list, but a lot of items fall under a category and some are even combined.

All we are saying is, this list is not just words on a page.

Make a Few Big Boxes

Depending on how much you are able to pack up, you may have to make a few bigger boxes. Not only are these easier to carry and transport, they are also less expensive to buy. You can use boxes with drawers to store your dishes and glasses.

Bubble Wrap, Newspaper, or Clothes?

We suggest packing dishes and glasses in bubble wrap, newspaper, or clothing. Bubble wrap allows your dishes to retain their shape, and it prevents your dishes from moving around while they are packed.

Newspaper is a great option, as it can be left over for the next day when you’re sleeping. It is ideal if you have long trips ahead of you.

Clothing is a great alternative if your dishes have long tentacles. Clothing can be used as a makeshift type of padding for dishes.

You can also create a makeshift clothing rack by putting your dishes into long lines. As long as you don’t have small glasses, you can easily balance plates and glasses on clothing and hang your dishes on the line.

Choose Paper or Plastic

These days, most things are made of plastic or some sort of disposable material that can be tossed in the trash when you’re done. Many people choose to throw their dinnerware in the paper recycling bin, but some homeowners don’t want to end up disposing of household items like wine glasses or antique dishes.

So, plastic is the way to go. Pick the pieces that you’ll use Before you start packing up your dishes, make sure you know what you’ll be using them for.

Do you use them for serving a salad or a small amount of food? Do you want to keep them for casual entertaining or serving special meals to friends?

Take a moment to think about what your regular use is like. If you’re going to be a casual dinner guest, keep it simple and take just a few plates, glasses, and cups.

Keep Dishes Together

As much as it might seem that you are too good to put dishes in a cupboard, chances are you will forget about certain ones. For instance, if you own a really pretty wine glass, but your everyday drink glass is clear, you’ll most likely reach into your cupboard for the clear one to drink your wine out of while you work on your computer.

Therefore, you might not remember to bring the other one with you. Having a way to keep your dishes together can be a good way to prevent you from getting distracted and wandering into the kitchen when it is time to cook a meal.

By keeping all of your dishes in one box, you can make sure that you can find them all in one place when unpacking.

Packing Glasses

When you do decide to pack your dishes and glasses, they will need to be in a way that makes sense for shipping, so you may need to pack them vertically or horizontally depending on the size.

The packing should be separated by flatware. Do NOT pack glasses with a saucer or on top of a dish for safety reasons. Be sure to label and mark your packing material as it will be needed for shipping.

Packing China

The container will need to be sealed and tied to prevent spills and leakage. A cover is usually used to protect the piece when transporting. Dishes and glassware should be put in a pillowcase or a box that is suitable for the occasion and the item’s type.

Wrap Dishware in Paper Towels for Extra Protection

When packing dishes, you need to protect them from mold and mildew. Luckily, many dishware brands make inserts for glass dishes that keep the dishes from breaking.

For the pots and pans, we recommend having a pair of tongs that you can use to pack the items with extra care.

Wrap glassware in bubble wrap for extra protection. Plastic is a good choice for glassware, but if you have a favorite set of a particular glassware, wrap the glassware in bubble wrap before you pack them. You don’t want to ruin your favorite glassware by packing it improperly.

Make Sure To Pack All the Pieces of Your Dishes and Glasses

Whether it’s the rice bowl or the cereal bowl, make sure to pack all the pieces of your dishes and glasses and make sure you pack enough of them to cover the total space needed for packing.

Sometimes, you may even have to pack your dishes ahead of time, before actually moving to make sure you have enough space for packing. If you’re unsure of how much room is left, it’s always a good idea to ask your landlord or a family member that lives close by.

The last thing you want is to run out of space in your new home and have to pay more money to replace everything.

Wrapping Up (Pun Intended)

We hope you enjoyed this Guide on How to Pack Your Dishes and Glassware When Moving. With just a bit of planning, wrapping materials and time, you should be able to make sure all of your dishes and glassware get to your new home safe and sound. If you ever need assistance with your packing or moving be sure to contact Texas Movers Group. Happy Wrapping!

5 Budget-Friendly Long-Distance Moving Tips

Here at Texas Movers Group, we are well aware that moving is a stressful time for most people. They have to pack and move all of their belongings while feeling overwhelmed by the whole ordeal.

This is especially true if you have to move out of your own home. When you have a lot of furniture to transport, it can be impossible to find affordable moving companies that will keep you within your budget.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should let yourself get ripped off when it comes to moving costs. Follow these 5 budget-friendly long-distance moving tips which will help you save a considerable amount on the big day.

Understand the Cost of Long-Distance Moving

Nowadays, most long-distance moving companies have apps that can be accessed through smartphones and tablets. These apps provide an interactive and interactive map so that you can learn about the area in which you will be moving.

Most companies use these apps to explain the cost of long-distance moving. For example, if you will be moving to a city in another state, you can learn about the cost of renting a vehicle, hiring a moving company, or how much it would cost to purchase packing boxes.

It is important to know the prices before you move. It’s always recommended to contact your movers for a free consultation so a representative can walk you through the process step by step

It’s Cheaper To Pack Yourself Right? (Hint: No It Isn’t)

Have you ever considered how much better the packing and moving process would be if you packed everything yourself? This may seem like a crazy idea since it’s a lot of work for you to lug around all of your belongings. You’d be right, it’s a crazy idea.

Sure, you can actually pack everything yourself and you may actually save a few bucks, but it’s just not practical for long distance moving. By the time you run around purchasing boxes, packing materials, plus more for the larger items, a professional moving team could have already taken care of everything for you.

But what if you don’t want to worry about any of the packings? Consider using a White Glove Service if your budget allows for it. You’ll still stay within budget and save yourself the mental anguish of a large move.

Pick a Good Time for Your Move

Timing is key when making a cross country move. You’ll eventually have to know when to make an educated decision about moving. It’s actually cheaper to get the move done while the weather is nice. Things you’ll need to think about are:

  • You should be able to estimate how much furniture, appliances, and other valuables you will be moving. If not for instance one of our expert Personal Long Distance Moving Consultants will be happy to help.
  • Will you be moving while the weather is warm? It would make better sense so that no one will be caught in a snowstorm.
  • Are you planning on selling items? You can always do this easier when the weather is nice for yard sales

Get Rid of or Sell Large Items if You Can

Before you pack the moving truck, consider what you have to move. What furniture or kitchen items do you have that are too large or just plain too old and unwanted?

Think about what you want to keep, sell, or donate to your neighbors. You’ll have a more manageable load, and they can benefit from all of your furniture and other possessions.

If you have possessions you simply can’t live without but don’t want to take them with you right now, you might want to consider putting them in storage.  This saves both time and money.

Know How To Pack Everything Properly

When you are moving, it is a lot easier to overpack than underpack. Some people even try to pack everything in one or two boxes.

This will create a lot of waste and become a real hassle. Therefore, you should make sure that everything you will need is packed properly in boxes before you start your move.

Then, when you have everything you need, you can open a few boxes and start putting your new home together.

Packing boxes that are of the same size is also a good idea. It is much easier to bring the boxes to the moving van or truck when they are of the same size.

Consider Hiring Professional Movers

There are a lot of moving companies out there, but most of them aren’t actually licensed and professional movers. If you hire someone like this, they might put your stuff in the wrong place or damage your furniture.

They also might bring in their friends and family to help them pack your belongings, which will add a lot of unnecessary stress to your moving day. Therefore, you should hire a professional moving company and get them to pack your things.

They will follow the correct packing checklist for long distance moving, which will help you save a considerable amount of time and money.

Professional movers normally have a great reputation and are reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is long distance moving really expensive when you use professional movers?

Actually moving long distances doesn’t have to be expensive. That is if you decide to use a professional moving service. What you spend when you try to do this all by yourself will turn out to be way more expensive.

This is because professional long distance movers already have everything you’ll need. This includes boxes, packing materials, people to help load and unload and even storage facilities if you need it.

When you only have to deal with one business for all your needs, it saves money bigtime.

Is it better just to take everything with me all at once?

Sometimes it’s better to take everything with you all at once, but we wouldn’t recommend it on a limited budget. One of the biggest mistakes people make when moving is to bring way too much stuff.

It’s a fact that most people who move long distances really don’t want or need half of the items they take with them when moving.

Save yourself time, energy and stress by dumping, selling or donating the items you can really live without. Concentrate on ridding yourself of the largest items first, such as old appliances and worn out furniture and bedding.
